| Sigma gets extra points for max. aperture and style: 200-500mm f/2.8 EX DG Looks like a cross between an intercontinental ballistic missile and a giant thermos flask, it weighs 15.7 kilograms and it costs around £20,000. So what’s special? Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, which is rare enough in a fixed focal length 500mm but unprecedented in a zoom. This makes the Sigma ideal for a wide range of tasks including long-range sports and wildlife photography and even astrophotography. And there’s an optional converter which doubles the focal length to 400-1000mm, though it does reduce the maximum aperture to f/5.6 at the same time. Obviously this isn’t the sort of lens you might stow in your backpack on the off-chance you might need it, but for low-light, long-range photography it’s superb. | |

| RE: "Mother of All Zoom" entry, above photo of mass collection of nikon lenses... the big white one is a rare 2000mm F11, which was recently auctioned off (for charity) at $95,000: (note the small and insignificant attachment at one end of the lens.... that's a 35mm camera): More info: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/reflex/2000mm.htm | |
